I have been with them for over 18 years. Since they were bought out by Petro, they have gone downhill fast. We have been without heat and hot water for the last 3 days. We called them for a service repair and set an appointment 3 times!! They cancelled my service call twice without telling me!! Then when I asked they about it, they came up with lies about how they already came over and knocked on door when we were home all day. Not to mention they are suppose to call before they come. After they dropped my calls a few times they finally gave me another reschedule. Wish I could give them a 0 star. On top of that, they charge a ridiculous premium on oil. I wonder where my money is going to, because it's not going into the service. Customers beware! I will definitely be looking to switch elsewhere!

I was with General for over 30 years. I never had a problem with them. Since they merged or were bought out by Petro, I had to have call 3 times and had 3 different service men on the same day to fix it . Finally the last one took care of it. Also, when my contract was up they wanted to charge me over $6.00/gallon for oil. I dropped them immediately.

I was with General Utilities for twenty years. They got bought out by Petro. I will no longer do business with them. I just found out that I had a contract with out the service contract. They never offered me a service contact and when I found out I did not have it they wanted to charge me $ 225.00. I only had to months left. I would not recommend them. I will look around for a better oil company that thinks of there customers and is honest about what they offer. Please make sure you ask about the service contract, so they package it with the price. I would not recommend them to any one I know.

I Will Never Recommend or Use this Company Again! The lack of empathy and proper Customer service skills disgusts me! I purchased my home 6 years ago and was referred to this company by the family of the previous owners. I chose this company based on that recommendation, instead of using Sloman's, whom I previously had at my prior address. My boiler, purchased from General, caught fire the day before Christmas Eve, The COLDEST Day of the YEAR! Thank God my Entire Home wasn't affected, but for Christmas and New Years, my family and I had No Heat or Hot water. And to make matters worse, we all got sick, including my mother, who is a senior. Bc the prior owners purchased the boiler before I moved in 6 years ago (Within the 10 year warranty), they did Not honor the warranty. So they expected me to purchase a new boiler for over $12k, I needed time to think and process this with the cost of oil increasing. Long story short, they charged me $600 for canceling my contract although, I only had 1 month left on it and it caught fire. The Customer Serve Manager Libby was very Rude and Condescending when I asked for the fee to be pro-rated or consider the years of service this home had with the company. They showed no compassion and no empathy, I am extremely disappointed and upset, and will contact the BBB.

I am been a General customer through at least 3 seasons perhaps 4, and have never had any major problem with them. They are always courteous, always respond if I have a problem which could be a lack of heat, oil leak from burner, strong smell, or smoke. I am a homeowner for 4 decades, and General was not our first company-I honestly like them better, the others were also major LI household names, never small outfits. If I have a problem I KNOW I do not want outside contractors, and always ask for a General employee. Yes, once a problem was not fixed at first, and another repairman was sent back a bit later. The end result was satisfying, isn't that what counts? There have been times I request a delivery when I am not scheduled and they comply. I prefer my tank never to go below 1/4. I do receive a call prior to any delivery since access is behind a locked gate. And yes, at one time it was impossible to pay a bill on-line, but that is no longer the case. I've read all the negative comments and felt General deserves a positive comment. Price is always an issue, one of the reasons I left my last company 4 years ago.
